CertainTeed Corporation and LiveRoof – a Natural Partnership for Structurally and Environmentally Sound Vegetative Roofing Systems
(Valley Forge, Pa.) – Two companies with a passion for “green” are joining forces to pave the way for a more, innovative vegetative roofing system that is structurally and environmentally sound. CertainTeed Corporation and LiveRoof® have partnered to create and distribute a system that combines high-quality Flintlastic™ 20-year modified bitumen roofing products with LiveRoof’s integrated green roofing system.
Unlike most vegetative roofing systems, LiveRoof is built offsite and installed fully grown for an instantly mature green roof. It has the convenience of modularity with the function of a “plant in place” green roof. The system’s unique grids enable water, nutrients and beneficial organisms to flow naturally across the rooftop, giving it a realistic meadow-like appearance. In addition, it can reduce air conditioning costs of a single story building by 20-25 percent, release oxygen and absorb greenhouse gases.
“CertainTeed Roofing is on the cutting edge of design and, together with LiveRoof, is meeting the changing demands of innovative architecture,” says Barbara McDonough, commercial roofing marketing manager for CertainTeed Roofing. “Our Flintlastic product line has been manufactured with premium quality materials and will provide LiveRoof systems with added moisture protection, longevity and performance.”
The recommended CertainTeed roofing systems for LiveRoof include Flintlastic™ UltraGlass SA or Flintlastic Ultra Poly SMS base sheets combined with a Flintlastic GTA/GTA-FR/FR-P/GMS cap sheet. DiamondDeck™, CertainTeed’s new synthetic roofing underlayment, is also recommended for use as a root barrier between the waterproofing system and the LiveRoof system.
LiveRoof maximizes LEED® certification points by qualifying for categories not applicable to typical green roofing systems and has the potential to contribute more than 20 LEED certification points to a building’s design. LiveRoof systems prevent excess storm water discharge and filter and detoxify air pollutants. Their plants and soil are acoustic insulators and reduce indoor sound by as much as 40 decibels. Also, by reducing roof temperatures during summer months, the system is an effective way of mitigating urban heat island effect. For more information about LiveRoof, visit www.liveroof.com.
Many of CertainTeed’s roofing products also contribute to the LEED program for both commercial and residential construction projects and are ENERGY STAR® certified. Additionally, CertainTeed’s roofing plants recycle nearly 90 percent of the manufacturing waste into asphalt materials for road construction. For more information, visit www.certainteed.com.
